You can contact the airline bagage claim department.  Which airline is it?  There are laws and limitations.  Keep receipts.  Don't plan on getting everything back, so really just buy what you need.  The airlines can be difficult and sometimes you'll get a check and other times you'll get your suitcase 3 weeks later and almost no money.  Good luck
