If you ask for only one suggestion go to the Lago Maggiore.

If you like an alternative (closer to Milan) I would go to Pavia and Vigevano.

On the way from Milan to Pavia there is another interesting place worth with a visit. It's Bereguardo with the Visconti's Castle.

If at the end you like to spend one day fully immerged in the middle age ambience it's a must you go to Grezzano Visconti (abt. 200 inhabitants-a small village with a castle in the municipality of Vigolzone- province of Piacenza).
