I am from Glasgow but live abroad. My 8 year old daughter has seen Braveheart about 12 times and this year when we go back to visit my parents she wants to see where it all happened.....Any ideas? It will have to be something that will interest an 8 year old....is the Wallace Monument any good?

  1. Stirling is a cool town, the castle is excellent. The Wallace monument I have to say probably worth a visit if you're in the area but not that fantastic and I wouldn't have thought it would amuse an 8 yo for too long.

What amused me most was that whilst most statues of William Wallace are old and make him look noble and distinguished the stone image at the monument looks like Mel Gibson...... shameless cashing in ...not that I blame them.

Most of 'where it all happened' is just fields these days with not much to see and as a Scot like yourself would know.... there's not a huge correlation between the film and 'what happened' anyway... it's a movie ... the truth is history.

I'm sure you'll all (esp your daughter) have a great time regardless..... there's so much evocative history up those parts as you know..... and she'll probably be too busy being spoilt by the grandparents anyway !!

    Enjoy your trip

  2. I think you answered your own question.  The Wallace Monument is the best place to go.  You can see Wallace's Sword there.  There are loads of stairs though & they are quite narrow, so you may want to take that into consideration.

  3. Braveheart is just a movie, and not a very truthfull one at that.
