I'm traveling with a friend to Costa Rica, she has friends over there who live in San Carlos, and Heredia. Who can tell me about these places? Are they safe? What is there to do?

  1. Stay in San Juan...do not go to the beach by bus or car or any other road transportation. SOO many holes in the roads; take a helicopter/plane to the beach. People there are ok but do not really go nutz over Americans.

  2. DON'T GO TO SAN JOSE!!! that's the capital and its sucks.. I'm from Costa Rica and i don't like going to San Jose... if you go.. don't i mean it don't wear any jewelry... gold, silver.... not rings and stuff.....

There is a lot of stuff you can do..

You can visit Arenal Volcano.. its really beautiful ( i used to live close to it) and also Lake Arenal...

the beaches are really beautiful and the nature it awesome....

visit this web site... this has a lot of information of what can you do, where can you go, what can you visit, wher you can stay and more...

  3. First, about safety use your common sense, like in any other latinamerican city, you will find crime in San José (the capital), a lot of pickpockets, so, don´t walk alone at night, or showing valuables.

About speaking english, don´t worry, a lot of costaricans speak very well english, you will not have any trouble finding help.

San Carlos is a very popular place, everyone goes there to see the Arenal Volcano, an active volcano, and its hot springs.  There are a lot of things to do there: canopy, rafting, horseback riding, etc.. you will have a good time there.

Heredia is one of Costa Rica´s provinces, the nearest from San José. There are many bars and night activities.  From there you can visit other tourist sites, like the Poas or Barva Volcanoes.

But the best is in Guanacaste, on the Pacific Coast, lots of beautiful beaches and hot places... pura vida!

  4. Costa Rica is an awesome place.  My husband is from Heredia, it's not a dangerous place but you should always use your common sense, especially in foreign countries.  You should probably stick to traveling around in groups just to be a little more secure.  The night life is pretty good in Heredia.  If you get a chance to venture out a little try to go to Manzanillo/Puerto Viejo and Arenal...those are a couple of my favorite places.  Good luck!

  5. That country, while it is beautiful, has the world's worst roads.

Pay a lot of attention while driving around, or you could literally fall off the road or into a hole as big as a rental car.

We stayed on the Papagayo peninsula, and it was beautiful and perfectly safe.

Went to Tamarindo, which was a seedy little seaside town.

  6. Costa Rica is the most beautiful place on earth, I feel in love with that country!

  7. It is an amazing country.  I have not been to Heredia or San Carlos.  We went for 10 days and stayed at San Jose, Liberia/Rincon De La Vieja, and Quepos/Manual Antonio.  We speak very little spanish, but didn't need it anyway.  Most people speak English.  We had a 4x4 rental (drove ourselves around the country) and had no problems (except watch for potholes...big ones!).  It was very safe and we loved everything about it.  Our least favorite was San Jose.  It's a typical big city and is not what we were interested in seeing in Costa Rica.  It is a very safe and friendly country.  Just use common sense, just like you would anywhere.  There is an incredible number of things to do depending on your interests.  We hiked, did a canopy tour (rode a zip line through the forest canopy...very cool and lots of fun), went shopping, ate at restaurants, saw lots of wildlife (monkeys, toucans, crocodiles, etc.).  You can spend U.S. money, but the exchange rate gets confusing when getting change, etc.  We took mostly traveler's checks and would cash them at banks when needed.  You can also use your ATM card there to get U.S. cash.  Wow, I could go on and on.  I love Costa Rica!  Prepare yourself for an incredible experience...you will love it!

  8. I can say Heredia has one of the greatest places in night activities. It has bars and clubs fulled with fun and great people. It's nature in both San Carlos and Heredia is great, I feel so relaxed each time I go. In San Carlos you can see of course the wonderful Arenal Volcano and it's thermal waters, so releasing......  The lagoon is pretty but once you see it there's nothing left to do. There are plenty of places to eat in San Carlos and all are terrifically delicious. Both cities are safe, specially San Carlos, but of course you have to take basic cares. Some cool places you may also visit are any of Guanacaste's or Limón's beaches. They are really peaceful and it's guaranteed that you are going to have a great time. Other places such as Cartago and San José are nice and there are some activities to do but I can assure you that they aren't as excitement as going into adventure through the rest of the country. I agree that streets are a little bit damaged, but that just make the adventure funnier and more excited!!!! I hope you enjoy visiting our country and that you feel great in here. I assure you you may want to come back.

  9. Beautiful country, great people. Try not to stay in the capital San Jose, its a toilet. Try to visit the coastal areas. Be careful. Like anywhere the is crime. Don't go for a walk after dark. Take a taxi direct from your hotel to your destination and back. Also learn some spanish phrases. There is almost no one that speaks english there.
