No one can tell when it will hit apparently, nor where. Not particularly worried (even though it is the size of a single deck bus) but would like to know where in the sky it can be seen so that I can look for it and maybe even catch it (provided it is a No 22). Thank you.

A LARGE US spy satellite is falling from orbit and could hit the Earth in late February or March, government officials said. The Associated Press reports the defunct satellite has lost power and propulsion and can no longer be controlled.

Officials said the satellite could contain hazardous materials and it is unknown where it might hit the Earth.

“Appropriate government agencies are monitoring the situation,” said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council.

“Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly.

“We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause,” he said.

He said it would be inappropriate to discuss whether the satellite could be shot down by missile.****

Oh and apprently this sort of things are common.

  6. Nobody knows exactly when and where it will come down. It is impossible to predict exactly. It is going completely around the Earth 16 times a day and they can only estimate that it will reenter in a month or two. When it finally does, it could be anywhere.

It is no big deal. Satellites reenter quite often. I am not sure why this one is getting so much attention.

  7. Well if you check your time table for the No 22 you may be able to work out when it is going to pass.  You may have quite a jump to catch it though as I've heard it isn't going to actualy hit, just skim past.  Good luck with that, it may be easier to catch than the scheduled 22.
