  1. its very long goes through many countries and big ships can supply goods and trade through these countries ........thats pretty much the basis of its success economically speaking.

  2. Even long before medieval times the river was a vital trade link allowing people all along its banks to move goods easily and trade with each other.

  3. The river first became truly important with the rise of medieval trade and was used for transport from northern Europe inland, because it was more efficient to use than the poor roads of the time. Being at a crossroads of trade led to settlements on the river growing and becoming wealthy, through trade and tolls.

The relatively easily navigable waters and therefore easy transport links, along with the proximity to Western Europe led to it becoming a great industrial centre within Germany as goods could quickly be imported and exported through it. This ultimately helped account for a lot of Germany's wealth at the time, and the Rheinland became even more important to Germany after they lost other major industrial centres in Silesia and Brandenburg after the world wars.

Even today, the Rheinland is one of the most industrialised areas of the world and the Rhine is one of the busiest rivers in Europe.
