We have been smelling this realllly funky odor for almost a year now. It comes from the bedroom mostly but has also been smelt in the living room on a number of ocasions. It literally smells like <cringe> sewage, f**t, s**+#. Untill now we havent been in the position to afford to call for a plumber to come out and look around, untill now. But if the problem the methane gas, and not a simple sewage leak, like we at first assumed, WHO whould I call to come and test my house for this? I'm 7.5 months pregnant and I have a 4 yr old. I'm worried about possible side effects, especially to my unborn, and my 4 yr old. Some one please help!!!!

  1. You can't smell methane gas because it's odorless.

The fire department biohazard division will investigate possible gas leaks.

  2. We called the fire department last year when we thought we had a gas leak. They came & tested our house with a meter.

  3. BGE will test.

  4. You should call a plumber. If you have methane gas it will be coming from sewer pipes. It might be that a vent pipe has gotten separated somewhere and gas is no longer being vented above the roof. Sewer gas is flammable and could explode if enough gits in your house.I do not mean to frighten you but you should find and solve the problem, if only to get rid of the Oder.

  5. Johnny 13 is right on the money, but you may not need a plumber....

Look under the sink with a good light for an open vent pipe or a vent valve that's stuck open.

Or if you live in a basement apartment, is there an unused drain that has dried out?

That would let in sewer gas, and is easily fixed by adding a quart of water to the drain now and then.

  6. The fire department
