Who chooses the names for race horses?

Some of them are so random! Where do they get the inspiration from?

The owners.  In the UK they can call it what they whatever they want as long as it complies with Weatherby's rules..

"In their early years before racing, Thoroughbred foals and yearlings don’t have their own names. Instead, they are referred to by their colour, s*x and the name of their sire (father) and dam (mother). For example, the great Nijinsky would have been ‘a bay colt by Northern Dancer out of Flaming Page’.

For example, horses names cannot be longer than 18 characters and spaces and names currently on the Register of Horse Names or names of horses who have won a major flat or jump race cannot be used (so there can only be one Best Mate or Shergar). And most famously, names whose meaning, pronunciation or spelling is obscene or insulting are prohibited. "

The foal must have a registered name before his first workout. There are a number of limitations: 18 letters including spaces, cannot have been used in the last 10 (?) years (have to double-check that). They'll give you a little leeway on "double-entendre" type names, but nothing too sleezy. Many owners try to make use of combining the dam and sire's names. You usually have to be prepared to submit about 20 names, in order, as you will often be turned down for any of the above (or more) reasons. Of course a number of names will never be re-used, such as Secretariat, Man O War, etc....

the trainer or owner usually names the foal, more often than not it is a combining of sire and dams names.
