I only know of Sarte stating the opposite..

  2. Sarte's statement is the correct version, but as that link above me shows, Sarte's purpose for stating it do not hit the mark.

    Existence must preceed essence because essences are existents, and as such can exist only in existence. They cannot exist where existence does not exist; therefore the quote you ask about cannot be correct anyway. Sartre simply veers away from the very essence of the subject itself, and goes off into his existential cave.
