  3. Its is Mark Twain. He stated it because the politics of the time was looking good on the outside (or Gilded) But if you scatched the surface you wouldn't like what was found

  4. Mark Twain sounds just right to me.  He was such a cynic.  Gilded means gold-plated and contrasts with Golden as in a Golden Age.
