  1. The definition you refer to most likely came about around the same time the proper meaning came out.

    The term 'roadie' refers to someone responsible for the equipment of a band.  This term came about around the 1960s with R&R when someone needed knowledge of ALL equipment.

    However, associating the prominent drug use of the time with rock stars, a 'roadie' was most likely thought to do the same.
