Question:

Who could I idolize?

I've been pretty depressed for a while, and I think i realized the cause of this might be the fact that i have no goal in life. I feel like I need a hero, someone to look up to, whether it be a philosopher, artist, or whatever. Any ideas on who that could be?

  1. God is the answer.

  2. I suggest Jesus.  What do you have to lose.  If you don;t like it the devil will always take you back.

  3. I suggest you read Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra if you’re feeling intellectually nible.

  4. your parent..thats where u r coming form

  5. If you like music... Jimi Hendrix. Just sit down and listen to his guitar playing or go to you tube and watch him play. Its amazing. I love him. And you may be inspired to play guitar...

  6. James, as an adult who has struggled with depression since childhood, I can empathize.  I have a suggestion for something that may give you some direction in life, and also some names of real people whom you may do research on so that you can admire them, look up to them aspire to be like them.  No need to idolize them, nor to idolize anyone, for that matter.

I found that when I was at my lowest, I began to feel better when helping others.  Are you in a position to volunteer somewhere?  After work or school, if you are a student?  Start out small, if you aren't feeling up to too much, and it doesn't have to be one-on-one, if you aren't comfortable with that dynamic.  You can help the local Red Cross stuff envelopes, or hand out juice at a blood drive, for example. Figure out a way to help, then offer.

As for some folks to look up to, you need only look at our country's past.  The brave acts and troubled, uncertain times that George Washington took our infant country through amaze me when I think about them, how about Thomas Jefferson, or John Adams?  RIght now, HBO is showing a mini-series of John Adams that is very true-to-life and reveals many truths that we never learned in fourth-grade history class.  Check it out, or read McCullough's fine book, that won a Pulitzer Prize.

Read about Harriet Tubman, and how she bravely led slaves to freedom during Civil War times.  What some people call heroes today are merely catasptrophes in designer clothing--rapist athletes, strung-out-rock stars, etc.  I think it is a shame that they are held up as heroes to today's kids.  No wonder people feel lost and alone!

If you are not fulfilled in your work, get some career counseling, or if you are still in school, change majors.  Figure out what you want to do, and go for it!  Having meaningful work and a purpose in life goes a long way toward making a person feel good about life, and about themselves.  Good luck--depression is tough, my friend.

But there are days in the sunshine sprinkled in among the crappy days.  Be grateful for every sunny moment you have, for the gratefulness can get you through some of the cloudy days.  Wishing you sunshine!

  7. Marilyn Monroe.

  8. Live your life for God.

  9. GOD!

  10. Don't look up to anyone. Look into you. Go out and try different stuff. Find what you like and don't like. Don't put the responsibility of you life on to someone else.

If you absolutely need a hero Hugh Hefner

  11. God is a good place to start. In fact, you shouldn't idolize anyone else but God. I guarantee you, when you go to Him, you will have a goal. A goal to serve Him.
