Who could a pirate fight?

I'm doing an IT project for school and I need to think of an idea. I have to design two characters and I have already designed a pirate. I decided I would make the pirate fight someone in a story however, fighting another pirate is fairly boring for an idea (also I can't think of a new design).

So I was wondering, who could a pirate fight. Other than ninjas (way to over used) what could I design that would fight with a pirate?

how about a viking?

he could fight an old president! hehe. orrrr maybe an animal like a polar bear, or a king, or an army dude,

How about a killer whale?

How about a samurai?  They are both equally well equipped with sword-fighting skills.  I think it would be a good match-up.

Realistically?

A naval fighter, such as a Royal or American Marine.

Perhaps a merchantman, defending his ship and cargo.
