  1. That's the direction the shadow moves on a sundial. If clocks had been invented in the southern hemisphere, clockwise would be in the opposite direction

  2. Babylonians, about 3,000 years BC.

Seriously! The Babylonians were amazing stargazers and astronomers, and they also observed the movement of the sun. They invented the sundial, and the movement of the sun across the sky makes the shadow on a sundial move clockwise.

They actually invented most of modern time-telling and angle-measurement:

Their counting-system was based on the number 6 (not 10), which is why there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. And also why there are 360 (6x60) degrees in a circle. They believed there were 360 days in a year (of course, there are 365 1/4, but they were over 98% accurate, which isn't bad).

They were the first to classify the 12 signs of the zodiac, and to formally codify the passage of the 4 seasons. The reason we have 12 months in a year is because of the 12 zodiac signs.

They used these numbers to derive the number of hours in the day (6x4 = 24, which is also 2x12).

  3. If I had to guess, I would say it is because that is the way the sun moves across the sky.

  4. That is the direction that sundials move, so when clocks were invented, I suppose it was only natural to have them move in the same direction, clockwise.
