Toshiba, the creator of hd-dvd accepted the defeat as hd-dvd experienced a lot of technical difficulties. so blue-ray wins.

Sony was determined not to let the same thing happen to them again....Betamax was a better design, but they kept the rights and royalties under control, which drove the market to VHS....

This time they made better deals with the manufacturers, then the movie studios came online...that, buttressed by the PS3 gamers built a dedicated group of purchasers for their product....

The HD-DVD group could not compete with that....

The winner was decided when the manufacturers of HD-DVD ceased production.  They decided to pull the product from the market when Blu-Ray gained the majority of the sales and market share.  

Major studios started putting our product on Blu-Ray which means that consumers would have to use Blu-Ray products to play movies on DVD.  So, consumers voted with their dollars.

its not decided, its just that people are using Blue-Ray more than HD-DVD because the quality is better!
