  1. You don't have to do any of this. Its all optional. I hardly ever celebrate my bdays anymore. I just allow people to say happy birthday. I dont expect gifts, parties, or anything.

  2. it was started a long time ago as a pagan ritual to sanctify the day of the eve of your birth so that you could have a new start in life on a yearly basis.. later we added presents and started singing (chanting) music.

  3. I betcha a mother decided a long time ago to celebrate her child's birth :)

  4. The happy birthday song is under copyright.  It was invented by 2 sisters, Mildred and Patty Hill, in 1893.  It started as a greeting for teachers to sing to their students in the morning.  It went,

      Good morning to you,

      Good morning to you,

      Good morning, dear students

      Good morning to all

It was published in a song book called Song stories for the kindergarten

No one really knows who switched the lyrics to happy birthday to you but the happy birthday lyrics first appeared in a songbook edited by Robert H. Coleman in 1924 where they were published as a second stanza to the good morning lyrics.
