  2. I think that the use of red to indicate stop (both on signs and on traffic lights) came from railroad trains having a red lantern on the rear to warn the train behind to stop before hitting it.

  3. It is natural that when a red color comes something is in danger, also the bulls gets angry/agitataed at the sign of a

    red  cloth, there are also other animals which attack when the red clothes is worn.

    Based on these it RED means stop

    and green is a pleasant color and soothes the eyes, so when in green the  movement begins

    Amber is a mid way process to pause before stopping.
