It does make more sense that it is tricks with the lighting and lense or dust on the lense or a few other rather mundane explanations.

Very good question.  I see a lot of beliefs in this section that seem to be based on nothing more than unsubstantiated rumors, anecdotes and books written by complete idiots.

Some people insist its a ghost to increase their business and generate buzz. For example, there are ghost tours that "guarantee" you will photograph a ghost. Lots of people who don't know anything about orbs buy into it and pay to take the tour/course.

Then the people who took the tour/course go out and perpetuate the theory.

In my experience, most oftentimes the orbs have a logical conclusion - either dust or reflected light.

I am a firm believer in ghost and entities, I just don't think they are truly captured on film as often as some would have you believe.

I believe a skeptic first presented the case as "best evidence for spirits" so they would finally have something they could actually explain.

Probably started with the Ancients and maybe even b4 that.

Superstition. Somebody once saw the orbs and could not explain them, and surmised they should be spirits. They're more often than not flecks of dust or simply lens flares.
