  1. Neil Alperstein did a study with a multitude of celebrity fans. He came to the conclusion that fans incorporate celebrities into their "imaginary social worlds". The fan forms a relationship with the celebrity in their minds, and perceives the celebrities values and personality how they wish. The celebrity becomes mixed in with their day to day lives, and causes stimulation and inspiration in the fan.  The celebrity is often their definition of success, whether it be a sports figure, musician, actress, etc.

And so I think celebrities have come to define the norms in our society, as we try to align our identities with certain celebrities by imitating their appearance, level of success, and behavior....but that's just me, and really, there are so many factors that contribute to the norms of society.

  2. every one does. society does. what exactly is defined as a norm? i've had numerous sociology classes in college, shoot, that's what my degree is in! i still am confused with society today. and it only gets worse. it's becoming out of control! so a norm, is the least of our worries...

  3. I believe the media influences social norms.

Ultimately, society defines social norms considering we as a people accept or reject a certain notion, behavior or value and determine what is normal versus radical.

  4. Remember there are three key elements: folkways, mores, and laws.

For example (folkways and mores) those who are religious: the church. Because regardless of other 'norms' religious norms will out weigh. Look at Islam, Jehovah's Witness, Jim Jones, etc. In a Mennonite community the religious leaders and the Bible determine their norms. Certain folkways and mores differ in different parts of the country and from state to state sometimes.

Society as a whole tends to be guided by the laws and regulations that are set out by the elite. They have the financial and social capital to set these norms into motion.

Finally, each individual uses a combination of these to establish the norms for their family which in turn affects future norms.

  5. The majority does
