Who deserves the world no 1 after Henin's retirement?

Sharapova or Ivanovic since their point is very close to each other. Or any other girl?

Sharapova deserves it.  Not only was she #2 behind Henin, but this season she shares the lead with Serena for the most titles (3) and least losses (2), however, Sharapova has already won a slam this year.  

As for the other candidates, so far Ivanovic has 1 title and 5 losses, Jankovic no titles and 9 losses, Kuznetsova no titles and 7 losses.  That rounds up the top 5.  I don't think any of these other girls deserves to lead the pack.

Ivanovic has not proved herself as a champion yet. She hasn't won a Grand Slam and beaten the best players on the biggest stage yet. Of those 2 Sharapova deserves it more, she won a Slam this year and has a better win-loss record than Ivanovic this year and she should get the number 1 but I think it will soon be takin off her by Serena Williams. Williams also has a great win-loss record this year and is in great form and I think she will probably do better than Sharapova at the French this year, she's won the tournament before and I'm still not convinced Sharapova is comfortable on clay even though she will probably reach the last 16 or quarter finals and then there's Wimbledon where she's a two time former champion so I think she will be top pretty soon.

Sharapova deserves it because she has the second highest point total after Henin, and she'll increase her lead over the rest of the top 4 after Rome.  Ivanovic is on her way down after losing in the 2nd round, and I doubt she'll defend her final at Roland Garros, which will drop her considerably more in the rankings.

Maria Sharapova deserves the No. 1 rank out of all the girls in the top 10. She has already won 3 titiles this year, going into two semifinals and one quarterfinal of Tier I tournaments. And she's already won a Grand Slam this year.

Ana, who will be ranked No. 2, doesn't deserve the No. 1 spot. She hasn't won any Grand Slams yet and did not have a good start at her clay court season this year, unable to defend her titile at Berlin losing to Elena Dementieva and also lost to a qualifier at the second round in Rome after receiving a first round bye.

I think the key word here is "deserves" and how you interpret it. Based on that I'd say Sharapova. However, if the question was: "what player is most feared when they're on top of their game," I think you'd have to say Serena Williams. As much as I like Sharapova, Williams when she's focused is very tough.

maria deserves it more! after being #5 by the end of the year 2007, she proved that she can still be the no.1... she just dropped the rankings last year because of injuries... by 2008, she showed people that she improved her game and by winning the Australian Open... and won Doha, and Amelia Island...

ana, haven't won any grandslam yet... and showed some poorness on her game during the start of the claycourt season.. losing in the second round in rome....

so maria deserves it more...
