And who is responsible for letting him do it?

I am referring to spark plug and timing chain, placement and design.

  1. The Ford 4.6 and 5.4 are modular engines, which means that they are designed to have individual systems serviced one at a time rather than having to do multiple things at once. The only 4.6 I have ever had a problem with was on a Lincoln Continental. It is crammed into the engine bay, making it nearly impossible to service anything. Other vehicles, such as the Mustang and the trucks are fairly simple to work on as far as ignition and timing components.

  2. every engine has the potential fubar situations, look at gm the older v blocks had a situation that was interesting if you ask me. the gasket that sealed the intake to the block was in four pieces, two valve covers really and a thin strip in the front and rear. every manufacturer has a potential recall. look at dodge and the 2.2 liter engines , for years it had a problem with a leaking head gasket.

  3. A room full of engineers.

As for the spark plug issue, what actual percentage of 4.6 adn 5.4 owners actually experience this problem?  Is it greater or less than the number who experience broken coil springs on their Explorer/Taurus/Escort/Focus?  Or worn out Ball Joints on their (insert name of any Ford truck here).  Or broken cam synchonizers on a Taurus, etc, etc, etc,

My point is, every vehicle has its weak spots, its problem areas, even a Toyota.  Singling out one particular problem that while expensive, is also not statistically all that common seems pointless.
