  1. What about these...?

Ahmadabad, Ahmednagar, Aurangzeb Road, Humayun Road, Akbar Road, Allahabad, Aurangabad, Ghazipur, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Goa, Mangolpuri... etc... etc...

Politicians in the corridors of power cannot change these names...

    Hope Mayavati could do....

  2. the people of mumbai decided to change it

  3. May be Shiv Sena made the decision.

  4. mumbai's pronunciation is mum-bye

the name mumbai is derived from mumba or maha-amba, the hindu goddess mumbadevi. the former name, bombay, came from the portuguese colonists in the 16th century (bom bahia meaning "good bay" in portuguese and taking the written form bombaim).  the british gained posession in the 17th century and anglicized the name to bombay, although it was known as mumbai/mambai to native indians who spoke marathi and gujarati and as bambai to those who spoke hindi and urdu.

the name was officially changed to its marathi pronunciation, mumbai, in 1995. the decision was made by the (somewhat newly) independent indian government.

  5. i liked the old name. I still say Bombay.
