  1. Yes William Webb Ellis was the soccer player who picked up the ball and ran with it at the school of Rugby in 1823. But the game truly began a few seconds later when some huge guy (future front row player) tackled him and took the ball away from him. Then after wards went to the pub with his teammates, drank beer and sang a few songs.

    Clearly a departure from soccer.

  2. As per Max above. The story goes that while playing football he picked up the ball and ran with it. Webb Ellis went to an English private school, named Rugby, in the town of Rugby (I kid you not). The new game was named after Ellis' school.

  3. Willian Webb Ellis was hunting the fabled black jaguar in the deep amazon jungle when he came across a fabulous beast that all the natives worshipped. He managed to catch the beast and shipped it back to Europe to be studied. He called the beast "Rugby" and DNA testing found the beast to be a distant relative of soccer but had evovled into a far superior beast. In the mid early 90's the species was threatened by poaches but a clever management brought the species back from the brink of extinction.

Today the species not only roam the jungles of South America but a thriving in Europe and the south pacific.

Another story I heard was William picked up a soccer ball and ran creating rugby but I like my story better.
