  1. The first subatomic particle to be identified was the electron, in 1898. Ten years later, Ernest Rutherford discovered that atoms have a very dense nucleus, which contains protons. In 1932, James Chadwick discovered the neutron, another particle located within the nucleus.

And so scientists thought they had found the smallest atomic building blocks. This changed in 1963 when Murray Gell-Mann proposed his quark theory. Gell-Mann believed that each proton and each neutron is made up of three even smaller particles -- particles he named quarks.

  2. Biology is considered the most broad and complex science. There's no why. It's the how that's more interesting.

  3. John Dalton proposed the ideas of atoms in 1800.  It described them a small indivisible particles  they could not transform into atoms of other types, could neither be created nor destroyed and all atoms of one element were identical.  They could be combined to form new compounds with their own characteristics, different from the characteristics of their components.

This is still a good working definition of atoms.

Before Dalton, in ancient Greece a man named Democritus described the idea of atoms as indivisible minuscule particles that combined to form all matter.  The ancient world though the basic elements were earth, air, fire and water.

Biology is wide and complicated because it emcompasses dozens of different subjects, from the most vague naturalistict descriptions of plants and animals to the most sophisticated chemical and mathematical descriptions and manipulations of organic compounds at molecular levels.

  4. The ancient Greeks. It's their word. It means "indivisible" and refered to what they believed was the smallest quantity of a substance you could have. It remained that way until the atomic age.
