  1. You realize that this is a silly question, I hope.  Sort of like asking who discovered the moon and when.

Man has been aware of solar eclipses for as long as history can determine.  Many ancient documents contain reference to solar eclipse events.

Several ancient civilizations were evidently able to predict their occurrence (with mixed success, actually, but they did identify the periodicity of the events), implying a sufficient understanding of the process to at least recognize it is a naturally recurring event.

The modern understanding of planetary motion, at least in europe, derives from the work of several astronomers (galileo, kepler, newton, etc.),  The work of these people led to the ability to predict the motion of the planets and their satellites and thus the ability to predict the occurrence of the various eclipses.  Not sure about the parallel development of these ideas in the east (china etc.)

  2. it was know to people of ancient ROMAN,GREEK,EGYPT,INDUS & ETC..............they taught it was great gaint dragon tht came betwwen sun & the earthh.....later on they made calculations when it will come & etc etc

  3. Records of solar eclipses have been kept since ancient times. A Syrian clay tablet records a solar eclipse on March 5, 1223 BCE, while Paul Griffin argues that a stone in Ireland records an eclipse on November 30, 3340 BCE. Chinese historical records of solar eclipses date back over 4,000 years and have been used to measure changes in the Earth's rate of spin. Eclipse dates can also be used for chronological dating of historical records.

  4. Humans did it.
