  1. The discovery of the structure of matter is a very interesting bit of scientific history.  There were a lot of scientists working on various aspects of matter and the theory of electrons, protons and nuetrons developed to what it is today based on observations and measurements, and very clever experiements done of many years by many different people.  Michealson and Morley (sp?) I think are credited with measuring the electrical charge on a single electron and that was a pretty cool experiment if you want to research something specific.

  2. it was rutherford with the famous "gold leaf" experiment

  3. Don't know about discovery...  but the earliest learned models of the atom having + and - charges should be creditted to...

    J. J. Thomson... as in Thomson's plum pudding model of the atom...

His model, was more a theory.. and soon, Ernest Rutherford altered to the Planetary model..

  4. The ancient Greeks noticed rubbing fur on various substances, such as amber, caused them to attract light objects, such as hair. This was reported by Thales of Miletus, circa 600 BC. In 1600, English scientist William Gilbert coined the word electricus from the Greek word for amber.

(I knew it was the ancient Greeks, and had something to do with amber, but couldn't remember the details. Thank you Wikipedia.)
