We have a small piece of land adjoining our garden which we would like to acquire to extend out garden. We're pretty sure its owned and maintained by the county council. Who would be the best contact at the council to make an initial enquiry? Also how can I ensure the land doesn't have major pipes or electricity line underneath?

  1. Just go to the council offices and ask, as for the latter, the council will also know that.

  2. Start to cultivate it without asking. If nothing is said after some years you have a legal right to the land

  3. You need to speak to the Councils Legal Department If it is your Local Council then its your Boroughs Legal Officer if its the County Council then its the County Councils Solicitor.

When you buy the Land it has to be registered with the Land Registry Office and you have to do certain searches etc things like Mining,Water. Sewerage etc

you can of course do the conveyancing yourself but most just instruct a Solicitor and let them do the searches
