Who would I ask or what department would I ask for when calling the credit card companies regarding my mother's account? She is currently in the hospital and I want to negotiate a lower rate with them.

  1. The others are right...You must be authorized to act on her behalf by having POA or other proof submitted to the company before you can discuss account details or changes. I know...I have had to do this for my ailing mother.

  2. If you know your moms info like SS# just pretend you're her. Otherwise you will run into all the BS stated above. You lie and it works fine, ridiculous "system" most companies have.

  3. Unless the account is in your name they won't allow you to discuss the account.  You can speak to anyone in customer service.  If your mother is able to get on the phone she can verify all the security info on her account and then tell the rep to speak to you.  Some companies will note the account, but you may have to get Power of Attorney to handle your mother personal finances if she is going to be ill for an extended period of time.  If not, she can take care of it when she feels better.

  4. Well unless you're an authorized user and/or have power of attorney they're not going to speak to you anyway for reasons of confidentiality.

If she hasn't already & she's able t do so, your mom should write the company a letter of direction stating that you authorizes you to make inquiries and/or changes to her account.

Hopefully her credit is pristine as this would be the determining factor on whether or not she gets a lower rate.

  5. Contact customer service and ask them what paperwork or information you need beside power of attorney.
