Who do australian malls close early?

Most of the malls close at 5 thirty pm. Isn't that too early? Most malls in my place close at around 9 or ten pm...

What can you do there in Australia after 6 for fun? Are their movie theaters that are still open or cafes or restaurants that open until late at night?
