  1. I have never found any online charter schools in NY that are free but there are some that anyone can join like Progress Academy and CLASS.

Progress Academy is open to anyone with access to an internet connection. As an online curriculum program, they are available around the world to provide a quality homeschooling curriculum. Progress Academy is unique because they offer an annual subscription with a customized student account. You may pick and choose the courses you would like, and have 365 days to work at your own pace.

Progress Academy is not a free onlne school but is affordable. For as low as $71.00 a month you can enroll and get everything you need. This school is available for children grades k-12.

They provide a broad range of tools within their curriculum using digital on-line textbooks and interactive streaming videos. Pearson/Prentice-Hall, McGraw-Hill, Scott Foresman Education Divisions, United Streaming, BrainPop and Digital Curriculum are all recognized as industry leaders in education that they use.

    Class Home School

The Christian Liberty Academy School System (CLASS) is an independent and non-denominational K–12 home school program.

CLASS has helped thousands of families to get started and succeed in home schooling. Today, CLASS consists of thousands of home schools throughout the United States and around the world, with students ranging in age from four to adult. CLASS graduates are being accepted by leading colleges, universities, and military academies.

  2. First of all, get connected to the HSLDA - they can help you out with any problems you might run into. Second, you have to write a 'letter of intent' stating that you are going to be homeschooling your children the following school year. There may be a deadline for this, but I'm not entirely sure. When my parents homeschooled my siblings and I, the body of the letter usually went something like "Please accept this as notification of our intent to homeschool our children, *our names* for the 2005-2006 school year". And, you also should include an IHIP, or Individualised Home Instruction Plan, that details what courses your child is taking, how many credits, and what textbooks are being used. Then, every quarter, you should be submitting a report of the classes taken, credits earned, and grades in the class. If you're satisfied that your child has been learning their material, and don't feel like calculating the grade (My mom and I always agreed on random estimates, LOL) you can just mark down an 'S' for 'Satisfcatory'. Every few years your child will need to take a standardised test of some sort, but this is something that may vary from school district to school district. For more information, look up a local homeschooling support group, and talk to members which have had experience dealing with your specific school district.

  3. First place to start is with HSLDA.  This is an organization dedicated to helping the homeschooling family with support and connections.  On their web site (HSLDA.org) is information about homeschool support groups in NY and throughout the US.  HSLDA can also give you step by step about how to get started with homeschooling concerning the requirements of your state.  A local support group can help you get the resources and tools so that you can fulfill those requirements.

    This will get you started...
