Amtrak is the place to contact, but I have some bad news: the closest that Amtrak comes to Brownsville, Texas is Houston.  Also, while Amtrak does serve Columbia, the trains from there only go roughly north and south, with no easy connections to trains heading west.  You'd have to get to someplace in the western part of the state, such as Greenville, in order to get a train that went to New Orleans, from where you could connect to a train to Houston.

As I said, probably not what you're looking for....
