Someone that was merely a belt holder does not count, I'm talking about someone that held the Ring Magazine Championship.

  1. Fernando Vargas, he is an embarrasment to us Mexicans.

  2. Billy Papke.  Held title on two different occasions for a total of 4 months.  He lost the title, on his first defense of it, both times.

I dont know if there is a valid answer for this question.  The middleweight division has historically been one of the toughest divisions.   Because of its very nature,  it has always consisted of world class fighters.  The best fighters in history are at or within the range of the 160lb class.

The middleweight division is where you have your perfect blend of speed and power.  IOW,  the heavyweight division often consists of power punchers who dont move much.  Of course there have been exceptions.   The lighter weight divisions have it's share of punchers too.  However,  the 150--170 range is where you have the most talent.  If you could make a list of the 100 best boxers in history,  I would bet that most of them are in this range.

If you are middleweight champion,  it means you have bested one or many world class fighters.  Some champions are better than others but I dont know if the middleweight division has had any really bad champions.  Maybe since the days of the Alphabet Organizations but certainly not during the days of the Undisputed Champions.
