I used to have two jobs but I quit one of them so now I am earning £6000 less, therefore I will be paying less tax, who do I contact to ensure that I am not over-taxed?

  1. Hi - I assume you are in UK?

Contact the tax office of the people you work for and tell them what has happened. If you earn over £5435 a year with your employer, as long as you are on tax code 543L it will not make any difference to you.  If you are on basic rate tax (BR) you need to call quickly as you are overpaying tax!

Incidentally, if you were not on tax code BR with your second job you may have been underpaying tax.  Best to sort it asap.

Ask your employer for the tax office telephone number.  You will need your NI number and tax references of the employers.

  2. Did you quit your main job, or the other? Was it the job with the code showing the tax allowance, or the one coded BR? If the latter, you don't need to do anything, you will have been taxed correctly, but if the former, you need to contact tax office.

  3. The Inland Revenue.

  4. HM Revenue and Customs are the people you need to contact. I have a slight feeling that £6000 is below the lowest tax bracket and you may not be taxed at all. However if you are taxed then it would only be at 8%, which means 8p in every pound eraned afyter a certain level. I study economics! You may need to send in your P60 which tells you everything you've earned in the last tax year, you get this from your employe. Unfortunately you may have to cliam a tax rebate which takes ages, probably not until the end of the next financial year (April time)
