Patti LuPone or Helena Boheme Carter? The best version of Sweeney Todd I know of is the live version with Patti Lupone (who rules all!) in it. Am I the only one who thinks Helena wasn't very good at all? She has too much of a sickly sweet voice for the role in my opinion. Who did you think do better? Team Patti!

  1. Helena.

I just feel like she did such an awesome job of discovering the character, and embracing her, ultimately

  2. I believe Patti is brilliant on the stage and Helena is brilliant on the screen. Theatre and Film are rather different, and I thought they both did exceptionally well with taking the character and making it their own.

  3. Out of those to LuPone wins by a long shot but I prefer Angela Lansbury who was the original.  She doesn't have the voice of Patti but I think she acts the part better.

  4. Patti LuPone...by a thousand miles.

Angela Landsbury will always hold a special place in my heart, but Patti definitely took the role to the next level.

Helena Bonham Carter was definitely not vocally capable. The role calls for some serious belting that she just could not do.

  5. well take into consideration Pattis version was too over the top for screne and would have been horrible transmitted on the camera and helenas wouldnt be as good as pattis on the stage but it would still be pretty darn good and helena did a fantastic should portraying the character the way she saw fit

    helena was better sorry

  6. You are definitely not the only one.

    Patti destroys Carter with ease.

Carter's voice wasn't developed enough, and she shouldn't have been in the movie.

  7. Patti kicks butt in everything! She's one of my faves although my favorite musical is Cats. Lol, Sweeny's too serious.

  8. I agree with zotdirector. Patti LuPone was much better than Helena Bonham Carter, but Angela Lansbury rocked too. I actually preferred her, because her voice was just...kind of weird, to be honest. A lot more of a strange, eery kind of voice than Patti had. Patti's voice was really good, but Angela put a lot of acting into her singing. So I say Patti is the answer to YOUR question, but Angela Lansbury was the best Lovett.

Plus she played the teapot on Beauty and the Beast. :D

  9. Definitely agreeing with you! Patti LuPone had the best comedic timing EVER, a terrific voice, and the perfect character for Mrs. Lovett.

Helena Bonham Carter wasn't terrible. Broadway shows need to be toned down for the movie versions. However, it takes much more talent to perform live.

    Go Patti!!
