  1. Time will tell, I guess.  I like Texiera but Casey was a force for the Angels and the fans are going to miss him!!  He might not be a switch hitter, nor is he famous (yet) like Texiera, but their numbers are pretty close!!  The Braves got a bargain with Casey and, hopefully, the Angels didn't give him up for a very expensive tank!

  2. Mark Teixeira became pretty well-known here in Texas as a "less than good sport." I work in the media here, and it doesn't surprise me that he keeps getting dealt to different teams. He's not a gracious player and teams don't want to deal with his arrogance.

In my opinion, on a strictly baseball stand point, Anaheim will have immediate success with Teixeira. How well are they going to put up with him off the field though is what I'm waiting to see. Teixeira is eligible for free agency at the end of the season... should be interesting.

Kotchman doesn't have quite the bat Teixeira does, but doesn't have the same liability either. If Marek develops into a solid pitcher, Atlanta might have gotten the better end of the deal... especially if Mark was causing problems in the clubhouse.

  3. As an Angel fan, I honestly think that this was a pretty even and equally beneficial trade considering where both of these teams are right now.

Kotchman is going to be a very solid major league first baseman. He'll realistically probably end up being a .295, 20/90 guy who will win a couple gold gloves in his career. He may have a great year or two, and make an Allstar team at some point, but he's not a "star." Very good player though. Atlanta, who was jut going to lose Teixiera at the end of the year anyway, gets a good replacement who they can develope and a good salary dump. I don't know much about the pitching prospect, but I hear Aidehart was being looked at. So if he was a "lower the bargain compromise," I imagine he is worthwhile.

The Angels grab is obvious, but they're playing roulette with hanging onto him. They are basically renting Teixiera for two months, and giving up Kotchman for the right to do so. This is something they needed to do. They needed to do something to try to show their fans that they aren't satisfied being ousted in the first round every year. Even if it gets them no further in the playoffs, it's a great statement. I think it makes them the current favorite to go all the way though. Great move.

  4. It depends on a number of things in the future.  On the surface, it's a great move for the Angels.  They've added more power to a lineup that needs it and he's a gold glover at first base.  They've helped their chances for going deep in the playoffs.

The other factors to consider are if the Angels can sign Tex long term and if Kotchman develops any more power that's been projected from him.  A bonus for the Braves would be if the prospect they got contributes anything in the future.  Overall, good trade for the Angels.  They're playing for now and this can't hurt their chances.

  5. Atlanta got the better end of the trade. Mark T. is been in the league for a while, and he's a good solid player and all, but he is also a liability as far as getting hurt goes.

Atlanta got some young talent and probably a bit of cash for him. Which makes this a better situation because now they can focus on next year and basically throw away the rest of the MLB season.

Time to start fading the Braves.

  6. It depends on what Anaheim does, anything less than a Championship and/or a new deal with Tex makes this a bad deal for them in the long haul....but short term they got the better end of the deal, they got the biggest bat on the market for a young 1B and a prospect.

  7. Both. Atlanta is on a budget and Kotchman is above average and probably as good defensively and he is locked up for a few more years on the cheap. Angels needed protection for Vlad especially going into the playoff chase and now they have that legit power bat and cleanup hitter. Is it about being regualr season or winning titles? I think the Angels showed with this move that they are serious about winning titles when the perfect situation presents itself, like now.

And don't forget about Kendry Morales who has been blocked for a few years. With Kotchman gone it opens up playing time for him if they don't resign Tex. People underestimate Morales but if given the proper situation where he plays FT he will surprise many folks. Frankly I wish Atlanta could have picked him up too somehow, he has a lot of upside.

  8. NO doubt, Angels. They obviously wanted more power at first, offensively. Despite Vlad's off season, this staff is stacked and the team to beat. Braves realize they are not going to be able to get the division, or WC, and looking to try and make things happen next season.
