  1. Mark Martin

  2. Dale Earnhardt.  There were lots of fatal wrecks before his, but his untimely death actually made NASCAR *think* to make the sport safer.

  3. i cant say just one driver has been the most influential , all the great drivers from the past like petty, pearson, yarbrough, the allisons, all those legends paved the way for the likes of earnhardt ,elliott ,wallace, waltrip to bring nascar to the national spotlight ,so all of those guys were the reason nascar is as big as it is today.

  4. Jozi hit it on the head. Without Earnhardt, NASCAR never would have received the publicity they always yearned for, though in a negative way. And those post Earnhardt safety advances have saved so many lives. Without those, Jeff Gordon more than likely would not have survived that crash in Las Vegas earlier this year. That would have been devastating. Yeah, Earnhardt will always be known as the Intimidator, but ultimately, he'll be known for as a life saver.

  5. with out richard petty their would be no nascar

he did every thing for his fans and made nascar fan friendly and allowed that interaction of fan and driver which alot of sports dont do.

  6. Jimmie Johnson.....well Jeff Gordon. he helped open the door to expose NASCAR to the modern era.

    Thank you Jeff !

  7. Matt Kenseth

    he just is
