  1. i like BJ, i want him to win, and i honestly think he will...

but his trash talking makes me a little weary........

  2. It's a tough fight to call. The longer the fight goes the more it sways in Sherk's favor. Sean is a cardio machine and BJ has a history of gassing, so Sherk will look to get the takedowns early and often in order to grind away at BJ. Penn on the other hand is very comfortable and dangerous from his back because of his tremendous guard, but keep in mind that Sherk has never been submitted. On the feet I'd say it is a wash, Penn has better hand speed and power but Sherk has very good defensive boxing skills and technical strikes.

In the end I'm going to go with BJ via RNC in the 2nd round.

  3. I personally think that it will depend on who the ref is.  If Herb is manning the fight that will be good for Penn. Herb will let the bottom fighter have a bit more time to work submissions if he has a BJJ or other submission fighting background.

If a ref who likes to stand it up a little quick is in charge, it's good for Sherk.  He can go into his "take down then sleepy town" offense (I coined this for Shawn) where he shoots a beautiful inside single or double leg take down and then falls asleep on their chest in the guard until the ref stands it up. Then it's just wash, rinse, repeat until the match is over.

Another factor is Sherk's steroid use.  I know nothing of roids, but if baseball is any indicator (MLB is on track to having 1000 less home runs this year than 2006) then some of that overwhelming power of his might not be what it used to be.

I have a feeling that it will be Penn - late 2nd early 3rd by arm bar.

  4. Sherk is stronger, faster and 10 times better conditioned than Penn. He has taken Hughes, St. Pierre and Parisyan the distance and will not crack under the pressure by fighting a big name as Stevenson was when he fought Penn. He isn't as versed at submissions as Penn is but he is also way to strong to get caught in some of the subs Penn has gotten on guys like Pulver and Stevenson. It has the making for fight of the year.

    I call Sherk by decision...

  5. To the poster above, Sherk did not take St. Pierre the distance, Sherk was stopped via strikes in the 2nd.

To the question. I see Penn winning this fight. He will put Sherk on his back, some place Sherk hasnt had much success, see his GSP and Hughes fights, both of which he lost. Then use GnP to break Sherk down and eventually get the submission victory. I say sometime in the third round.

The only way I see Sherk winning this fight is if Penn cant finish Sherk before the start of the third, and Penn's cardio isnt really what he's saying it is, and we're getting the same ol' BJ, dominate in the early going but gases and quits as the fights goes to the later rounds. But I really believe BJ is 100% committed to cardio, so I dont think it will be a problem.

So, my outcome- Penn via RNC early 3rd round

  6. BJ Penn submits Sherk in a triangle choke round 2.

Sherk is a tough dude - strong and tons of cardio - but Penn is more skilled in submissions.   And Penn is a smarter guy when it comes to strategy.

I'm thinking you'll see Sherk win round 1 with takedowns and his aggresion, but he'll get overconfident by round 2 and Penn will win from the bottom.

  7. I'd have to give this one to BJ for the following reasons:

    1)Sherk likes the take down

2)BJ is LEGENDARY on the ground, even on his back, he call pull of dangerous submissions

3)BJ has a slight edge in striking, Sherk sets up his takedowns with strikes but not as good a striker as BJ (which means he would have to take BJ down and go for GNP)

4)Sherk hasn't finished his most recent fights, mostly winning by decision. The likelyhood of this fight going to the judges is slim.

  8. I'm not too good with predictions, but I'm going to say Sean Sherk by UD because:

    - Although BJ is a wizard on the ground, Sean is short and stocky. He won't be easy to sub. Plus he has never been subbed.

    - Sherk believes he is still champ and that BJ didn't win the belt from the true champ. Needless to say, Sherk is pissed off.

-MOST IMPORTANTLY: Sherk has incredible cardio which is something BJ lacks. I think BJ is the more skilled fighter overall, but if you don't have good cardio, you won't have the energy to efficiently use those skills. "Fatigue makes cowards of us all."

BJ very well could KO Sherk on the feet or sub him, but I just don't see that happening in the first few rounds and with each round Sherk's chance of winning goes up. I really think Sherk is going to pull the upset here.

But you know, this is BJ Penn he's fighting. Never, ever count BJ out. Then again, Sherk is no slouch either. He's the former champion and it would be stupid to count him out as well. Regardless of who wins, it should be a great, action-packed fight.

  9. I think that Bj will win but only because hes actually in shape now, the way guys were beating him before was just waiting to the later rounds when he ran out of gas, but now that he's in shape he looks good in the ring, i see it going a lot like the Joe Stevenson fight im going with Penn by submission in the 3 round.
