No doubt different people have different opinions, and it is a question that has been widely discussed.  Kasparov and Fishcer are always in the running.  Personally my vote would be for Jose Raul Capablanca.  You might find these links interesting.

I would say that Bobby Fishers arrival on the chess scene was the most "timely" of all time.  There have been many truly amazing chess players, probably there is no way to really decide who was the greatest.  Rather what did each man do in the time he had.
