Ok, so I don't have one individual in particular, but I would have to say the native americans because without them, the Europeans probably would not have survived once they reached America.

This is the type of question that you could get a million different answers from a million different people if you asked enough. Everyone is going to have their own lines of thought, reasoning, ideology, background info etc that will help them determine the answer. Also I would argue that one single person, even "the most important", is not necessarily responsible for a huge part of anything in and of themselves.

It is great numbers of people, along with socioeconomic and political pressure, that truly determine the course of history, rather than any one person.

That being said, if I had to answer that question, I would agree with the answerer who said Abraham Lincoln. The events that were set in motion because of the election of 1860, and that would not have happened at all at that point in time if he had not been around are simply greater than any other individual I can think of. When you think of the south seceding, the enormous bloodshed that followed, the emancipation proclamation and the eventual defeat of the south and ruin of the plantation economy; it all adds up into the best answer to your question.
