  1. 0845 numbers are 'owned' by Oftcom. In fact, all UK telephone numbers are owned by Ofcom. The cost of an 0845 number ranges from under a penny a minute to up to 6p/minute, depending on network service provider.  Who this particular number is allocated to is a different matter, but it won't cost a 'fortune' to ring it.

Whilst telemarketing calls can be annoying, my custom is to be polite on the first, but not tolerate a second call from the same outfit after I've told them not to contact me again.

I have found that the most effective way of doing this is not to hang up straight away.

After several calls from a mobile phone provider who rang me to tell me I 'qualified' for a free upgrade (which involved me taking out a contract that would quadruple my normal monthly call costs), the method I adopted was to take the call and hold on to it for as long as I could, in order to waste as much of their time as possible. Someone is being paid a lot more to phone me than I am paid to sit there and take the call, and if I waste their time, I cost them money and I lose them the opportunity to call others.

I managed to string out the 'free mobile' call for 29 minutes (I timed it) before 'Sam' began to realise that I wasn't going to sign up or give him my bank account details. Be aware these guys record the calls they make to you for what they call 'paperless contracts', which means that once they've got your bank details, they'll set a contract in place without a signature from you.

I have never had another call from 3G. I think they've marked my phone number as a 'time-waster'.

    Result!

  2. 0845 numbers are charged at the local rate, not the national rate. If for example you lived in the North of the UK and had to call a company in the south, you'd be charged local rate, so it's cheaper for you.

Quite a number of companies now use the 0845 prefix to ensure that clients will call them

  3. 0845 numbers are cheaper to call. its probably a business or a charity or something like that

  4. I'm not ringing it, proberly costs a fortune.

  5. a business

Seems to be some kind of telemarketing company.  Names vary, but usually 'financial services authority' or similiar trying to flog something.  I just hang up on these type of jokers.
