It might have something to do with the election season approaching but I am not sure. A lot of times this happens right before elections.

Refiners are required to create a more expensive blend of gasoline by the government during the summer months.  This is partly to help prevent vapor lock in the hot weather and partly due to environmental concerns, since so many people drive during the summer.

The end result is that gas prices tend to rise around April and tend to decline in September- October.  So the answer to your first question is yes it'll decline, maybe not to $3.40 per gallon, but that'll depend on what happens in the oil markets.  It should then stay steady through the remainder of 2008 barring some catastrophic event in the oil markets.

People have cut costs, and are driving less on gas.  It is remarkable to see how much people have conserved in such a short period of time, and its not gona stop.  Since gas has gone up, so has food and other resources.  I believe the gas prices will steadily decrease like they have been since less gas is being consumed.  It may go up and down, but while people are conserving energy and saving gas, we won't see an increase as significant as it was...

This question seems to imply that the US or the US government has some type of direct control over oil and gasoline prices.

If it were true, and it most certainly is not since the oil market is a world market, why would they have allowed the price to move above $4 in the first place with all of the economic and political consequences they have already suffered?

Some people seem to be able to find a conspiracy under every tree.  It generally just shows a lack of understanding of the subject at hand.
