I am getting induced on friday. On thursday i have a doctors appointment and my doctor told me that he is going to put some type of balloon in my cervix to open it up some more....i was just wondering, does anyone know what this "balloon" is really called and what it looks like?

  1. I'm imagining it's not an actual balloon but something called "Laminaria".  It is a stick that they can insert into your cervix. It is dried seaweed that the moisture from your cervix will make it expand which will slowly expand your cervix.  There are times they will use an actual balloon but if they do that you have to be at the hospital to have it done - but the laminaria they will insert and you can go home with.  Congrats and good luck.

  2. It's a foely catheter... the same device they use to keep a catheter in a bladder.

It's an extremely narrow tube, with a deflated, non latex "balloon" on the end of it.  they fill the balloon with saline (salt water) and the weight of it acts on your cervix the way the baby's head is supposed to.

Is there a medical reason for your induction? (besides being past your due date, if you are)  if not, I'd strongly suggest waiting until you go into labor spontaneously.  The number one reason for c-sections in this country is a failed induction.

  3. well sorry i cant answer ur question but im having a csection fri and im starting to get very nervouse and freaked out .. lol good luck
