Question:

Who else thinks Shawne Merriman is making a huge mistake by planning to play this season with a bad knee?

I can understand wanting to play through the pain(especially in a contract year), but he's only 24 years old! He's taking an unnecessary risk for no reason(at least none that I can think of). Do you think this season will be his last(i.e. He does something on the field and tears up his knee bad enough that he has to retire)?

  1. This is a huge mistake in my opinion. If he gets hurt and ends his career he will only have himself to blame.

  2. He should get the surgery, because once he is really injured and can not play any more the team would cut him.  He has to think about life after football.  Walking later on in life is better then playing football now.

  3. Four surgeons!

  4. both he and the organization are probably making a huge mistake.... but i believe the chargers are a team that really wants to win now and not thinking about the future.

  5. If he has the surgery, he'll probably never play again anyway.  He's taking the chance that since he's been playing on it, he can continue to play on it.

Besides, playing professional sports is a deal with the devil.  Pretty much everyone realizes that you'll be in pain the rest of your life when you retire.

  6. If he won't listen to the experts, then it will be hard for me to feel any sympathy if he's injured really bad. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

  7. When you have FOUR surgeons telling you to take the surgery to save your career and you ignore them, then I feel no pity for you when your knee snaps under the pressure and ends your career.  With two tears, the thhird ligament is under even more stress and can tear much faster.  When Robert Edwards tore three ligaments in his knee at the beginnig of his career, it ended that fast.  He went from the end of 98 season to 2002 without any playing time due to the severity of that injury.

Merriman's knee may not be that severe in terms of onset of injury.  However, with two out of three torn ligaments with a third ready to shred, Shawne is pretty much risking his ability to walk, never mind his time with the Chargers.

It's a mistake to forego surgery.  If he injures himself further, then too bad for him.

  8. How many more questions are going to be asked about this topic? Seriously.

  9. Ummm let's see, I tore my ACL seventh grade year and I was the starting halfback, I came back and somehow played the through the immense pain after several shots in my knee to play 3 weeks later... I completely and totally hundred percent regret playing. I should have had the surgery and healed up completely, it still hurts when I run and stuff but has kinda healed up over the past 4 years. I lost a ton of speed and quickness though. Shawne needs the surgery, take the year off, get better for next year

  10. he needs more roids
