Who exactly is supposed to be the 'epic hero' in John Milton's 'Paradise Lost'?

  1. It's actually a bit complicated.  The short answer is Satan.  However, his heroic qualities diminish after his fall, so that the second half of PL can be read as a refutation of how much his heroic qualities are built up in the first half.  In that case, the answer boils down to either no one or God (which is a bit of a sketchy choice).
