I don't know but one could ask this answer of virtually every fruit or foodstuff.

I would imagine as they are originally from China, first known as the chinese gooseberry, they are from that area, I have seen them all over the world, and as they grown like grapes on vines, alot of grape producing countrys grow them Italy, the US, Australia, Argentina and I have had dried sliced ones from an Iranian fruit shop here in Toronto Canada the size of lemons.
