  1. It was used by the ancient Celtic people since pre-history. Their remains have been found in China. Old history books don't give them credit for it.

  2. It looks like Wikipedia has a decent entry on "Sillk Road."  You can get an idea of the history from there.

  3. Marco Polo

  4. People most likely traveled this route since prehistoric times.

  5. It is our nature to wonder what is beyond the horizon, and then to find out.

It was rare for one trader to travel the entire length of the Silk Road.  There were several entrepots along the route, where goods were sold to someone who would take them the next segment.  The Silk Road is a series of local trade routes  (local could mean several hundred kilometres) but the combination of those local trades meant that an individual item could travel the full length of the Road, albeit carried by a number of different traders.

  6. The Silk-Road and the shorter destinations that it connects pre-date Alexander the Great. with the finding of European mummies in western China this cloudy history question becomes mute. The Silk-Road was traveled many times before it was written about in any dialect or codex we have yet found. Many historians believe that when Modern Man left Africa he migrated east to India and China long before he migrated to Europe where he confronted Neanderthal Man.

With every passing year we get closer to answering some of these questions, but like" when was the Silk-Road first traveled?" We are backed into a corner where the smartest answer is, we do not know.
