  1. On May 8, 1541, Hernando de Soto became the first recorded European to reach the Mississippi River, which he called Rio de Espiritu Santo ("River of the Holy Spirit"), in the area of what is now Mississippi.

On March 2, 1699, Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville rediscovered the mouth of the Mississippi.

  2. You know... I'm from Mississippi but I've never thought about who discovered it or why it's named as such.  I did however look up Mississippi Delta on wikipedia.com and it gave lots of information but no specifics on who named it and why it's named that.  Sorry but hope this helps a little.

  3. La Salle was the first European to find the mouth of the Mississippi in 1683  having arrived by river from Canada. He left a small garrison and sailed to Europe. When he returned, he missed the mouth of the river because navigators could not yet calculate longitude reliably and got wrecked in Texas where he died. Pierre d'Iberville then rediscovered the mouth of the river. De Soto had crossed the river upstream of the mouth.

  4. hernando desoto

  5. Don't you think some native American was the first one to "discover" the delta?  That would be logical.  You need to slow down and research more carefully.  Your questions are fairly basic and you obviously haven't researched very hard.  This skill will help you through your school years and beyond.
