Possibly the first commercially successful loco was "Puffing Billy" built about 1813 and used until the 1860s at Wylam Colliery (coal mine).

The best known of transitional locos was "Locomotion No 1" of 1825 by Stephenson, who knew Trevithick well.

In 1829 Stephenson used ideas from several earlier builders and experience with "Locomotion No 1" to build "Rocket".  This  loco was the basis of almost all later steam locomotives as it abandoned vertical cylinders, used fire tubes and a blast pipe that blew exhaust steam up the chimney.  That sucked the fire through the boiler, which raised more steam.

  2. Richard Trevithick a Cornishman made the first engine to run on rails in 1804.It was called The Penydarren and pulled10 tons of iron,70 passengers and 5 wagons over a distance of 9 miles at speeds of 5 mph

  3. There were horse pulled trains working in mines before there were locomotives, like most innovations trains are a series of inventions and to say this is the very first would be kind of difficult. Was it the first time a peasant hooked two oxcarts behind one ox? Or the first time someone thought of putting two carts on some sort of rail system? Interesting question.
