Who funds the American Olympic Team (for any sport)?

I know with all of the professional equipment, practice gym, travel, pro trainer and every thing that goes with being in the Olympic. The cost of get a team ready has to be very high on someones bank account.

I was just wondering..

Who funds the American Olympic Team (for any sport)?

Is it the US Government/taxes are is it privet owned like a major league sports team are what?

  1. It's funded primarily by sponsors, donations, and branded product sales (they get proceeds on anything with USA plus the five-ring logo).

    Sports with big amateur following, like swimming, running, and shooting, can get free equipment in endorsement deals.  In other sports, they athletes usually buy some or all of their own equipment.

    The US government probably funds it a bit, and facilities like Colorado Springs, where many Olympians train, get state funding, but most of it comes from private sources.

    A portion of the IOC's take from international sponsors and other receipts also gets divvied up (proportionately to number of athletes) amongst all the national olympic committees, of which the USOC is one.

  3. The United States Olympic Committee organizes the Olympic Activities for the Americans. Though it is sanctioned by the government, it doesn't receive government funding. They are a non-profit organization.
