  1. The Peace Corps is a US Government organization, formed first under President Kennedy, and is probably the best-spent foreign aid money the government puts out.  Volunteers (of all ages-- in their 20s and in their 70s) go for two years, are trained in language, culture, and the skills they'll be using, then are placed in some of the most out-of-the-way parts of the globe.

In a lot of these places, the only thing the locals know abouot America is what they see at the movies (think about that for a moment) and what their government or press tells them.  A Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) comes and lives tgere, and "America" suddenly has a representative-- someone they can talk to, touch, learn about...  The skills the PCVs bring are important, of course, but just their willingness to live there-- not passing through like a tourist, but living in local housing, eating local food, getting the local wage-- makes an even bigger difference.

After two years, when the PCV comes back to the States, he or she has a whole body of knowledge about a part of the world many Americans know nothing about.  That benefits our country, as well.

(Regarding the comment about the fancy hotels, I have to admit that was a new one for me.  But, if en route to or from two years in a mud hut they get put up in a nice hotel, I figure it's worth it.)

  2. I have no idea , but , I meet them every now and then in airports.   honestly, they are usually booked in better hotels than I am. LOL.   i'd think that there is profit somewhere in this deal ?   just not sure where the money changes hands.

  3. The US taxpayer.
